U.S. Representative Terri Sewell (D) from Selma announced that she is hosting a job fair in the City of Birmingham on August 8th.
According to a statement released by the Congresswoman’s office: “Rep. Sewell is hosting a Job Fair on Wednesday, August 8th at the BJCC from 10am to 3pm. In association with the City of Birmingham and Cox Media Group, this Job Fair will bring together over 100 employers from a diverse range of sectors. We will feature 3 workshops focusing on career development, entrepreneurship, and workforce training. Each workshop will run at 11am and 1pm. We encourage you to bring your resume and dress for success. Admission is free. We hope to see you all there!”
Over one hundred employers are participating in the event including the City of Birmingham, Cox Media, UAB, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Alabama Power, Verizon, Golden Flake, the US Army, UPS, U.S. Steel, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing, Dollar General, Best Buy, Sodexo, the U.S. Department of Labor, AT&T, Birmingham VA Medical, Regions Bank, Drummond, Vulcan Industrial Contracting, and DCH Health Systems. Registration begins at 9:00 am.
Rep. Sewell’s Seventh Congressional District which consists of most of the City of Birmingham, part of Tuscaloosa, the City of Selma, and a large swath of Alabama’s once agriculturally productive Black Belt is the poorest Congressional District in the state. The median income is $26,672 and it has been hit hard by the 2008-2009 Recession and the weak economic recovery. According to the 2010 census, the district lost over 80,000 residents between 2000 and 2010 (the District has since been enlarged in the reapportionment process). There are over 50,000 unemployed people in the district and over 125,000 residents receive food stamps (recently renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)) and 25,000 receive WIC (Women, Infants and Children) subsidies to survive. Helping the people of Alabama and the Seventh District find jobs is a top priority.
This is Congresswoman Sewell’s First term representing the Seventh Congressional District. Her opponent in the November 6th General Election is Don Chamberlain (R) from Selma. Sewell in her first election defeated Chamberlain 72 to 28% in 2010.
