MONTGOMERY – The leaders of the Alabama Legislature today reacted to President Obama’s proposal to raise taxes on mid-to-higher-income earners, including many small businesses. House Speaker Mike Hubbard and Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh vowed to keep state taxes low and continue working to stimulate economic growth in the midst of a seemingly constant threat of new taxes and uncertainty from the federal government.
“It seems like every week we learn of another job-killing tax being pushed by President Obama and the Democrats,” Speaker Hubbard said. “As much progress as we are beginning to make in recovering from the recession, it doesn’t make things any easier when our President is playing election year politics with the economy. It is becoming more and more evident that the Alabama Legislature is the last line of defense between Alabama taxpayers and the federal government. Alabamians can rest assured that we’ll keep working to keep Alabama taxes low so our state can remain a great place to live and do business.”
“President Obama today delivered another slap in the face to economic recovery by trying to raise taxes on our nation’s small businesses – almost immediately after the Supreme Court confirmed that ObamaCare is one of the largest tax increases in our nation’s history,” said Senator Marsh. “Alabama Republicans will continue fighting an overzealous federal government by passing innovative incentives and pro-growth economic policies that encourage growth in the private sector, not hinder it.”
