From the Office of the Attorney General Luther Strange
(MONTGOMERY)—Attorney General Luther Strange is joining in a public awareness effort to remind citizens about the “Move Over” law, which was enacted in 2009.
When drivers approach an emergency or law enforcement vehicle on the roadside, the law requires them to take certain safety precautions. The law “requires a driver of a motor vehicle to move over when approaching a law enforcement vehicle, an emergency vehicle, or wrecker…” Drivers are required to move to a farther lane if possible. If it is not possible for the drivers to safely change lanes, they are required to move as far as safely possible from the roadside and to slow down to 15 mph less than the posted speed limit.
“Many Alabamians may not be aware of this law, so my hope is that we can shed light on something so critical to public safety,” said Attorney General Strange. Our law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to keep roadways safe. This law is an important protection for all drivers, and provides law enforcement and emergency workers with the clearance they need to respond to emergencies.”
