MONTGOMERY—A Special Grand Jury was impaneled in Montgomery, by order of Circuit Court Judge, Gene Reese. According to the order, the Office of Attorney General Luther Strange filed a motion on May 23, to impanel a special grand jury.
On Monday, Judge Reese ordered that the individuals who will serve on the special grand jury, be selected from those who were assembled by the Montgomery County District Attorney, for the County’s regular grand jury.
Judge Reese’s order reads, “The Court hereby ORDERS that a special grand jury be drawn from the jury panel and assembled for orientation on July 11, 2016.
While the subject of this special grand jury is yet unclear, Judge Reese said in his order that, “appropriate grounds exist to impanel a special grand jury.”
If this is a special grand jury being held by the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Divison, under the direction of Divison Chief Matt Hart, then politicos doing business in the Capitol City may need to be ready for some sleepless nights. Hart and his team, just weeks ago, successfully prosecuted former Speaker of the House, Mike Hubbard, on 12 felony counts of public corruption.
Hart’s team of “untouchables” include Deputy Attorney General Michael B. Duffy, Assistant Attorney Generals Kyle A. Beckman, Kevin W. Blackburn, Megan A. Kirkpatrick and Katie M. Langer. The team also includes investigators and support staff, who specialize in fighting public corruption and white collar crime.
